Community Events

The following pictures are of major events which took place in Prospect over the years, mostly having to do with the church.

The New Church

In 1921 Our Lady of Mount Carmel was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Nothing was saved, so the community rebuilt the church and this picture was taken the day the "new" church opened in 1922. The whole village was out and dressed in their best Sunday clothes.

The Blessing of the Boats, 1944/45

These are a series of Pictures of the Blessing of the Boats (or fleet) by the church and I guess for a good catch.

The Holy Name Society, 1944/45

This was a social group that the church had.

Masquerade Ball July 1922

Contributed by Ed Rogers: "This photograph was given to me by my mother, Ada Rogers (Duggan), who would have been about sixteen at the time the picture was taken. In addition to my mother, also shown is one of her brothers, Harold, and a sister Gladys who died quite young. Three of my mother's uncles: Dick, Bun, and Jack (Blinker) Duggan are also in the picture. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who can provide information on the other persons in the photo."

1944 Celebration of the founding of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Group picture - In this picture you see some of the people of Prospect, Dover and Shad Bay all dressed up in weird costumes. This was because they were reenacting the founding of the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in a play. This picture is larger then what is shown here.

135 Anniversary of the founding of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 1929

These are pictures that were taken in 1929 when Prospect and surrounding villages celebrated the 135 anniversay of the founding of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel n 1794.
